Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Sojourner House for their commitment to providing mothers suffering from addiction with safe and stable housing, vital services, and motivation to become self-sufficient and build a better life for their families and for 25 years of success, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 9th, 2016 to be "Sojourner House 25th Anniversary Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, named for the prominent preacher Sojourner Truth, Sojourner House was founded 25 years ago when a group of representatives from various social service agencies realized that far fewer drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs were available for women who suffered from addiction than for their male counterparts, and;

WHEREAS, three years later, Sojourner House was granted its own nonprofit status and a license by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a "women with children" residential facility, and;

WHEREAS, in 2004, Sojourner House partnered with a host of community organizations to create Motivation, Opportunities, Mentoring, and Spirituality (MOMS), a rehabilitation program designed to provide mothers who suffer from addiction with stable housing, key services, and inspiration to achieve self-sufficiency and maintain sobriety on the journey to recovery, and;

WHEREAS, along with government and foundation partners, Sojourner House developed previously blighted properties scattered throughout Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood into world-class facilities with 42 units for homeless mothers and their children, and these renovated properties enhance both the lives of the residents and the appearance of the greater community, and;

WHEREAS, working with the City of Pittsburgh, Sojourner House transformed two vacant lots into a safe, beautiful park-like space built with sustainable materials known as "MOMS Green," where residents and neighbors alike can gather to garden, socialize, and play, and;
