WHEREAS, DePaul School for Hearing and Speech was founded in 1908 by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in order to provide quality oral-education for children from birth to age 14 who are deaf or hard of hearing; and,
WHEREAS, for over 100 years, DePaul School for Hearing and Speech has carried out its commitment to hearing impaired children because they believe that those children have the potential to develop listening and spoken language skills without the use of sign language; and,
WHEREAS, the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech is one of only 48 schools worldwide, and the only one in Western Pennsylvania where the integration of listening, speech, speech-reading and language development are taught in every classroom, every day; and,
WHEREAS, the goal of the DePaul School is to give students the necessary spoken language skills to succeed in their neighborhood schools so that they can live in a world without boundaries and function independently; and,
WHEREAS, the ultimate goal of the DePaul School is for their students to reach their academic, social and career potential without being limited by their disability; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend DePaul School and their dedicated staff for their exceptional work with children with hearing loss; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 2, 2010, to be "Speak Miracles Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
