WHEREAS, sixty years ago, Pittsburgh Mayor David Lawrence and Philanthropist Richard King Mellon established an organization to address housing-related issues and dubbed the organization "Allegheny Council to Improve our Neighborhoods" or ACTION-Housing; and,
WHEREAS, over the course of its sixty year history, the organization has served the Pittsburgh region's most vulnerable residents, including the elderly, individuals with mental and physical disabilities, individuals who are homeless, veterans, women and children in crisis situations, young people who have aged out of the foster care system, and low-income families; and,
WHEREAS, today, ACTION-Housing provides affordable housing, special needs housing, essential supportive services, asset building programs, and educational and employment opportunities to over 7,200 people in the Pittsburgh region each year; and,
WHEREAS, in collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, other government partners, community development corporations, neighborhood organizations, and supportive service providers, ACTION-Housing has developed over 4,500 affordable housing units since 1985; and,
WHEREAS, one of the organization's most recent projects, the Penn-Mathilda Apartments, located in Garfield's Penn Avenue Arts District, provides affordable housing units to veterans and first-floor commercial space to nonprofit arts organizations serving the neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, another recent project revitalized two commercial spaces in Hazelwood's Second Avenue business district and the buildings' tenants will provide jobs for residents of the community; and,
WHEREAS, ACTION-Housing also offers programs designed to keep people in their homes, such as single-family home weatherization, in-home accessibility, and mortgage and foreclosure assistance, and the organization serves as an advocate, capacity builder, and partner for other groups seeking to build affordable housing; and,
