WHEREAS, public servants who devote time and energy to improve the well-being of our communities, often without recognition or pay, make the City of Pittsburgh a more livable place for all; and
WHEREAS, Jean Fink, a graduate of South Hills High School, advocated for an elected Pittsburgh Board of Public Education, and later served on the first ever elected board in 1976; and
WHEREAS, during her tenure Jean Fink served as President of the School Board, and was a strong advocate for neighborhood schools. She also served as Chair of the Business Affairs, Pupil Services, Personnel, Facilities, Strategic Planning, and the Urban Boards of Education Committees; and
WHEREAS, Jean Fink often went above and beyond the job description to serve the school district and its' students. On one rainy day, she even picked up 17 students in her Volkswagen and took them all home. Jean Fink also participated in countless ethnic food fairs throughout the district, and many students still remember their schools being filled with the smell of sausage and sauerkraut; and
WHEREAS, Jean Fink was part of a human chain across a major roadway to protest for lower speed limits in front of a school, demonstrating her commitment to student safety; and
WHEREAS, Jean Fink has earned the respect and gratitude of so many for her professional achievements, tireless work ethic, and for her outspoken advocacy on behalf of her community and the school district; and
WHEREAS, Jean Fink is most of all a proud and loving mother to Fred, Michael, Matthew, Joanne, Susie and Peggy, grandmother of nine, and great grandmother of five; and
WHEREAS, after serving on the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education for thirty-three years, Jean Fink retired on December 2, 2013; and
