• Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh celebrates the 110th Anniversary of Beechview neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and thanks all those who have volunteered their time and efforts to making this event successful, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 23, 2015 to be Beechview 110th Anniversary Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Beechview neighborhood of Pittsburgh, incorporated as a borough on July 23, 1905, is celebrating its 110th Anniversary in 2015, and;

WHEREAS, Beechview grew and developed following the arrival of the trolley line in 1904, and later the opening of the Liberty Tunnels in 1924, and;

WHEREAS, named for the many beech trees found on its hillsides, Beechview was originally settled by Scotch-Irish and English pioneers in the late 1700's. Welsh and Irish settlers soon followed working in the many local coal mines. The mid 1800's saw the arrival of German truck farmers. Italian and Jewish families began arriving in Beechview before World War I. Today, Beechview is welcoming a new wave of immigrants, and is home to the largest Hispanic community in the City, and;

WHEREAS, in addition to enjoying the hispanic culture reflected in new businesses like Las Palmas, El Milagro, and Casa Rasta, Beechview offers residents of all ages a variety of ways to fill their leisure time. Athletic programs, senior activities, and church, civic and social organizations are available in the neighborhood. Beechview is also home to two parks, four parklets, a senior citizens center, a newly renovated public library and the Seldom Seen Greenway, one of the last undeveloped parcels of land in the city, and;

WHEREAS, on Saturday, August 1, 2015, Beechview will be celebrating its 110th Anniversary along Broadway Avenue. This is a day for Beechview residents, past, present, and future to come together and celebrate Beechview's wonderful heritage and culture. Activities will include a photo booth, genealogy session, Beechview historical displays and digital scanning of your photographs to be added to the next "Beechview" book, and;

WHEREAS, Beechview's 100th Anniversary Celebration Reunion is being planned and executed by the Beechview Historical Society, with assistance from many local volunteers, other community groups, and Beechview's Business District Manager, an...
