WHEREAS, the Iranian Regime has imposed repressive regulations and gender apartheid on the people of Iran for decades: and,

WHEREAS, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman was unjustly arrested and subject to brutality by the Iranian morality police for her inadequate head covering, resulting in her death: and,
WHEREAS, Mahsa Amini’s life was tragically cut short, but triggered a historic, worldwide movement against the Iranian regime’s violations of women’s rights and human rights: and,
WHEREAS, the Woman, Life, Freedom movement has seen hundreds of thousands of women, from all walks of life, in Iran and around the world, fight endlessly for a free and democratic future: and,
WHEREAS, Mahsa Amini’s death has become a catalyst for the human rights movement in Iran and a beacon of hope for the future, encouraging generations to rise and fight in the face of adversity; and,
WHEREAS, this movement has continued to persevere over the last year, even as protestors were met with violence and repression; and,
WHEREAS, Mahsa Amini’s death and the strength of the Iranian people have served as a reminder of the power of women and human rights defenders, and the importance of resilience to create a democratic and equitable future for all.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the one-year commemoration of Mahsa Amini’s death in solidarity with the Iranian community within and beyond the borders of Pittsburgh, and the Greater Pittsburgh community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 16, 2023, to be “Mahsa Amini Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
