WHEREAS, TRIO (Transplant Recipients International Organization, Inc.) is a non-profit international organization committed to improving the quality of lives touched by the miracle of transplantation through support, advocacy, education, and awareness; and
WHEREAS, TRIO has grown at a tremendous rate with many more support groups in varying phases of development, provides a peer-counseling support system and facilitates programs to educate the public about the acute need for donation; and
WHEREAS, TRIO's symbol is the Tree of Life, a registered trademark with its intertwining branches, it represents the intertwining of the lives of two human beings, the donor and the recipient, through the Gift of Life and the green color represents the growth of new life; and
WHEREAS, this years' honorees are: Ron Shapiro, Professor of Surgery, The Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, Department of Surgery, University of Pittsburgh, and received the Gift of Life Award (National Kidney Foundation of Western Pennsylvania) in 1999; and Barbara J. Carpenter, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, AGH Campus, Allegheny General Hospital and has served on the Transplant Evaluation Committee at Allegheny General Hospital since 1988; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby acknowledges TRIO, their Honorees, and sponsors, for their hard work and dedication and calls upon all citizens to join in the effort of raising awareness for organ donors in communities throughout our City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares April 19, 2004 to be "Ron Shapiro, M.D., and Barbara J. Carpenter, M.D. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
