WHEREAS, the 2012 Carlow University Women of Spirit® Awards will be held on April 11, 2012 at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture; and
WHEREAS, this outstanding event is in the tradition of the Women of Spirit® program, which was established in 1993 to recognize outstanding women who, as leaders in the community, exemplify the mission of Carlow University, honoring the first "women of spirit" in the University's history, the Sisters of Mercy, who arrived in Pittsburgh from Carlow, Ireland in 1843 with a spirited mission to serve the poor, the sick, and the uneducated; and
WHEREAS, the following women will be honored for their accomplishments:
Maggie Daley, former first lady of Chicago, to be honored posthumously as this year's winner of the Women of Spirit® National Legacy Award.
Anne Martindale Williams, principal cellist and the association chair for the Pittsburgh Symphony, to be honored as this year's winner of the Women of Spirit® National Award.
Kim Tillotson Fleming, chairman and CEO of Hefren Tillotson, Inc., voted the "#1 Best Place to Work in Western Pennsylvania" in 2011, to be recognized with the Women of Spirit® Award for Values.
Katherine Donahue Freyvogel, president of Oakland Catholic High School, to be recognized with the Women of Spirit® Award for Scholarship.
Karen Dunn Kelley, CEO of Invesco Fixed Income, to be recognized with the Women of Spirit® Award for Vision.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the 2012 Carlow University Women of Spirit® Award winners for their service to the community and excellence in their professional endeavors.
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, April 11, 2012 to be Carlow University Women of Spirit® Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
