WHEREAS, August 15, 1947 is the date that India achieved its sovereignty and became a completely independent state. For the people of India, it was the end of British colonial rule and was a day of great fulfillment and a day to start a new beginning; and
WHEREAS, immigration from India to the Greater Pittsburgh Area began around the late 1950's. The Indian American community made the City of Pittsburgh their home to raise their children and grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, fifty years later, there are more than thirty thousand people of Indian origin living in the Greater Pittsburgh area, constituting our third largest ethnic community; and
WHEREAS, as a community, they are largely unseen and unheard, yet contribute substantial talent, knowledge and expertise to the development, well-being and enrichment of the area's infrastructure, services, industry, healthcare, education, economy and culture of the region; and
WHEREAS, the Indian Society of Pittsburgh was formed to provide a unified and distinguished voice of the people of Indian origin in the greater Pittsburgh area. It seeks to provide leadership in promoting the cultural, social, economic, political, and community activities of the people of Indian origin, in promoting India, and in contributing to the overall growth of the region; and
WHEREAS, on Sunday, August 22, 2004, the members of the Indian Society of Pittsburgh will come together and celebrate a Picnic for Unity & Freedom at Boyce Park in Monroeville to celebrate the 57th anniversary of India's independence.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and thanks all Indian Americans living in the Greater Pittsburgh Area for sharing their talents and contributing to the success of our region and wishes them a day of peace and unity as they celebrate India's Independence.
