Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Carlow University, the first women-centered university in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and its faculty and staff on the anniversary of the 75th year educating and preparing students for great achievements. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that August 31, 2004 be hereby declared "Carlow University Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in the 1920s, prominent civic leaders urged the Sisters of Mercy to establish a Catholic college for women. Mount Mercy College opened on September 24, 1929, with just 24 freshmen, seven faculty and makeshift classrooms in the Mercy convent; and

WHEREAS, by 1969, the Sisters of Mercy had established a large number of Mount Mercy schools throughout the United States. To preserve the unique identity of the institution, a name change was proposed and on April 17, 1969 Mount Mercy College became Carlow College; and
WHEREAS, at Carlow College, students, primarily women, are involved in a process of self-directed, lifelong learning which frees them to think clearly and creatively, to discover and to challenge or affirm cultural and aesthetic values, to respond reverently and sensitively to God and others, and to render competent and compassionate service in personal and professional life; and

WHEREAS, Carlow College is a culturally diverse community where members of all races, religions and nationalities receive the full respect that is the right of each member of the human family; and

WHEREAS, Carlow College educates, challenges and expects all students to uncover, expand and realize their potential. It promotes and affirms their progress in understanding and practicing each of these core values as witnessed by all members of the Carlow Community; and

WHEREAS, today, Carlow is recognized for its academic excellence. The curriculum celebrates the ideals of a liberal arts education while offering solid career preparation. As a college primarily for women, it has produced more than 10,000 graduates who are committed to lifelong learning, leadership and--above all--making a difference in others' lives; and
WHEREAS, on August 31, 2004, Carlow College celebrates the opening of their 75th Anniversary Year and a new name change, Carlow University.
