WHEREAS, Dr. Lola M. Thorpe, relocated from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh PA to minister with her husband, the late Bishop Eugene M. Thorpe, Sr. in 1968; and,

WHEREAS, in March 1973 Dr. Thorpe and her husband founded a new church where Dr. Thorpe served as the co-pastor; and,
WHEREAS, after retiring from the Pittsburgh Board of Education, she devoted her life to full-time ministry; and,
WHEREAS, during Dr. Thorpe’s many years in ministry she established the Interdenominational Prayer Luncheon, numerous church groups and has hosted a weekly television program, "Women in Ministry", as well as her own radio show entitled, "Moments of Inspiration" for more than 10 years, she is also the author of "When God Gave My Daughter Back" which was published in Purpose Magazine; and,
WHEREAS, among Dr. Thorpe’s proudest accomplishments is The Lola M. Thorpe Scholarship and the “Noble Women” class that she taught for more than 8 years, with a curriculum for hurting, transitioning, and growing women; and,
WHEREAS, in 2006 Dr. Thorpe became the lead pastor at Northside Institutional Church of God in Christ; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Thorpe’s growing congregation relocated to the Northside in 2011; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Thorpe has received many accolades and awards during her many years of ministry such as the 2011 Women of Excellence Award, and The Pittsburgh Circle of Courage Award; and,
WHEREAS, after more than 50 years of serving the Northside, the city of Pittsburgh and the faith-based community, Dr. Thorpe will be celebrating her retirement on October 26th, 2024 at the Central Northside Banquet & Event Hall.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and congratulate Dr. Lola Thorpe on her retirement and her impact on Pittsburgh’s Northside,
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 26th, 2024 to be “Dr. Lola Thorpe day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
