Whereas Ebenezer Baptist Church located at 2001 Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh's Hill District is celebrating their 133rd church anniversary; and
Whereas in 1875, Reverend R. Henry Marshall and ten members founded and charted Ebenezer Baptist Church. Of the ten chartered members there were seven men and three women; and
Whereas from these humble beginnings, Ebenezer Baptist Church created a spiritual home for generations of Hill District residents and Pittsburghers for over a century; and
Whereas Ebenezer Baptist Church's various Pittsburgh locations have included a host addresses situated in the Hill District until finally locating at its present location; and
Whereas throughout Ebenezer's existence it has succeeded in providing a nurturing and spiritual environment for numerous evangelists, pastors, and gospel performers, affording these individuals with an opportunity to acquire and hone the leadership skills necessary in order to better fulfill their callings; and
Whereas because of its deep commitment to community outreach, Ebenezer Baptist Church continues to proclaim the gospel in both its words and actions by contributing to missions at home and abroad and by caring for those individuals most in need; and
WHEREAS for the past 35 years, acting in his capacity as Senior Pastor , the Reverend Dr. J. Van Alfred Winsett has devoted himself to the service and ministry of the Ebenezer Baptist Church; and
Whereas under Pastor Winsett's leadership a senior citizens complex was built, an orphanage in Haiti founded and a weekly radio and television ministry was created; and
Whereas Ebenezer Baptist Church has overcome many obstacles during its lifetime and continues to remain true to its original mission by keeping its doors open to all who wish to enter and guaranteeing anyone that “ One Trip to Ebenezer and your life will never be the same”
