WHEREAS, passed on July 26th,1990 and modeled after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and ensures accessibility in public life; and,
WHEREAS, the ADA safeguards participation, inclusion, and accommodations in employment, education, transportation, communications, and guarantees access to state and local government programs and services; and,
WHEREAS, predating the passage of the ADA, the City of Pittsburgh has been a leader in inclusion through programs such as One Step Program, which provides grants to business owners to remove physical barriers for individuals with disabilities, and the Start on Success Program, which offers work experience to high school and college students with disabilities; and,
WHEREAS, the City staffs the City-County Task Force on Disabilities, a thirteen-member panel of advocates, service providers, and consumers appointed jointly by the Mayor and the Allegheny County Executive to provide a voice for individuals with disabilities within City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Government; and,
WHEREAS, the City works with organizations such as the Access Mob Pittsburgh, Community Living and Support Services (CLASS), the University of Pittsburgh's Human Engineering Research Laboratory (HERL), Hearing Loss Association of America: Pittsburgh Chapter, Golden Triangle Council for the Blind, Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, and other organizations to support and enhance their work with and for the disability community; and,
WHEREAS, City of Pittsburgh Departments work tirelessly to install more hearing loops and rug tiles to create accessible City facilities and build more accessible curb cuts in our neighborhoods each year; and,
