Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Kumite International and the Police Athletic League on their dedication to the youth of Pittsburgh through athletics. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that May 7 and 8, 2004 are proclaimed "Kumite International Days" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the month of May has been named National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by the Presidential Fitness Partnership; and
 
      WHEREAS, Kumite International, the martial arts division of the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League, will celebrate by sponsoring The Kumite Classic/Pittsburgh Fitness Festival being held Friday, May 7th  and Saturday, May 8th ; and
 
WHEREAS, through martial arts programs, Kumite International's goals and objectives for youth participants include:
Ø      Instilling high moral and civic standards;
Ø      Upholding integrity, ethics and a spirit of fair-play;
Ø      Providing a safe environment for recreation;
Ø      Promoting physical fitness and good health habits;
Ø      Rating the sport karate through a scholarship system;
Ø      Recognizing and supporting potential Olympic athletes;
Ø      Conducting demonstrations with emphasis on self-esteem and self confidence;
Ø      Organizing sport karate on high school and college levels.
