Whereas, Mt. Ararat Baptist Church's Community Activities Center is hosting its Seventh Annual Community Recognition Celebration on Friday, September 9, 2005 to honor four outstanding community leaders whose contributions, ranging from education to community development to the City's fiscal recovery display outstanding commitment to the City; and
Whereas, Mr. Malik Bankston, Executive Director of the Kingsley Association since 1998 has guided it to a four-fold increase in the size of its' operations, including its 56,000 square-foot Community Services Center in the City's Larimer neighborhood, continuing its' 112-year tradition of serving youth and families; and
Whereas, Dr. Shirley Biggs, Associate Professor in the University of Pittsburgh's School of Education, researches and teaches learning and teaching students from middle school through college and adult literacy and works to make challenging texts easier to comprehend, and is the Affirmative Action Officer for the School of Education, working to ensure diversity in future generations of teachers; and
Whereas, Mr. Glenn Mahone, a Vietnam Veteran and current partner at Reed Smith, has three decades of experience across a broad spectrum of business and municipal law, currently serves as general counsel to the Inter Governmental Cooperation Authority for Cities of the Second Class, a board empanelled to oversee the City's fiscal recovery, no small task; and
Whereas, Ms. Winifred Torbert, Director of Community Development for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who through the course of her work has forged numerous partnerships with local churches, community groups and youth groups.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends Mr. Malik Bankston, Dr. Shirley Biggs ,Mr. Glenn Mahone and Ms. Winifred Torbert , these four community leaders for their continuing dedication to make Pittsburgh a better place.
