Body
Whereas, the splash begun on March 31, 2004 known as Save Our Summer (SOS) when Elsie Hillman and Bill Trueheart, President of the Pittsburgh Foundation, at the request of City Councilman Sala Udin, convened a meeting with 100 foundation, corporate, labor, religious and political leaders to establish an initiative to provide financial and volunteer support to open some of the City's swimming pools and recreation centers; and

Whereas, in four short weeks, working closely with Duane Ashley, Director of Parks and Recreation, and Kate Dewey of Dewey and Kay, a significant donation from The Hillman Foundation and the donations of fellow Pittsburghers from $5.00 to $10,000, SOS 2004 surpassed its goal to raise $952.616.00, which allowed the City to open half its pools, and some recreation/food distribution centers in the most vulnerable neighborhoods; and

Whereas, SOS boasts a daily average pool attendance of 196 swimmers or 233,584 dips in the pools and employment for 171 lifeguards, pool managers and pool aids; and

Whereas, the fun was recorded by well-known photographer Mark Perrott, whose SOS  collection will be on permanent display at The Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center.
