WHEREAS, the city of Pittsburgh is committed to preserving the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and engaging its residents in urban life; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh values parks as an essential element of strong communities; and,
WHEREAS, National PARK(ing) Day, established by REBAR, a San Francisco art collective in 2005, is a collective effort of over 50 cities around the world to recognize the need for more urban green space and to provide artists with opportunities to express their creativity; and,
WHEREAS, National PARK(ing) Day temporarily transforms parking spots into public parks and challenges city residents to remember that streets belong to cyclists and pedestrians in addition to motorists; and,
WHEREAS, the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh, Office of Public Art, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and Riverlife, spearheaded the effort to promote this global event in Pittsburgh;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize National PARK(ing) Day as an innovative community event that offers a green vision for the City and hope that Pittsburgh make National PARK(ing) Day a yearly tradition; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 19, 2008, National PARK(ing) Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
