WHEREAS, Helen Baney was born on September 6,1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, Mrs. Baney was married to George Baney from 1944 until he passed away in 1993; and,
WHEREAS, together Mr. and Mrs. Baney raised four wonderful daughters, Paula, Becky, Sally, and Amy, and have five grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Baney has resided in her Allentown home for 83 years; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Baney has seen all of the changes that the Allentown neighborhood has experienced over the course of eight decades; and,
WHEREAS, she is a devoted member of the Allentown community, having volunteered extensively in the schools, church, and community organizations including the Allentown Civic Association; and,
WHEREAS, she still sits on the board of the Allentown Senior Citizens Association; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Baney was instrumental in revitalizing the St. George World War II memorial; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Baney fought to keep the trolley that went through Allentown operating for as long as possible so that transportation would be available to Allentown residents going from Allentown to Downtown Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, at 99 years old, Mrs. Baney is still smart as a whip, has a sharp memory, and is the go-to woman should you have any historical questions; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh expresses its deepest appreciation to Mrs. Baney for her countless contributions to the Allentown neighborhood; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Wednesday, September 6, 2023 to be “Helen Baney” Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
