WHEREAS, on Sunday, October 12th, 2008, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, the Sons of Columbus of America, Inc., and the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center will dedicate an official state historical marker honoring Frank Vittor, at the site of his statue of Christopher Columbus in Schenley Park; and
WHEREAS, Frank Vittor came to America in 1906, when he was eighteen years old, and worked as a sculptor in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Frank Vittor taught sculpture at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the Irene Kaufmann Settlement, and the Carnegie Museum; and
WHEREAS, Frank Vittor also founded Pittsburgh's Society of Sculptors, served on the Pittsburgh Planning Commission, and was a member of the Pittsburgh Beautification Forum; and
WHEREAS, the "sculptor of presidents," Frank Vittor, sculpted portrait busts of Calvin Coolidge, Woodrow Wilson, and Theodore Roosevelt, created models of all thirty-four presidents in 1959, and made more than two hundred other portrait busts in bronze; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh is home to more than fifty of Mr. Vittor's war memorials, fountains, and other sculptures.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors Frank Vittor's artistic and historical contributions to the City of Pittsburgh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Sunday, October 12th, 2008 "Frank Vittor Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
