WHEREAS, the Fineview Step Challenge was first organized in 1996 by neighbors Mary Jane Barbush and Judith Harvey, who sought to preserve the neighborhood’s historic stairways, promote community pride, and offer both athletic and leisurely participation; and
WHEREAS, the first event featured a 3.1-mile course with 381 steps, and has since grown into a celebrated annual tradition showcasing over 1,600 steps across 12 public staircases, including the remarkable 371-step ascent up Rising Main Avenue; and
WHEREAS, for thirty years, the Step Challenge has been led by neighborhood volunteers, drawing participants from across the region to experience Pittsburgh’s hillside landscapes and to support the Fineview Citizens Council in preserving affordable housing, enhancing neighborhood beauty, and uplifting young people; and
WHEREAS, the 30th Annual Fineview Step Challenge will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2025, beginning at the Fineview Outlook on Catoma Street, with both a 5-mile competitive course and a 2-mile vista walk for participants of all abilities; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does commend the Fineview Citizens Council and the community of Fineview for thirty years of dedication and spirit through the Step Challenge; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Saturday, October 4, 2025, to be “Fineview Step Challenge Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
