WHEREAS, The Friends of Danang, a humanitarian group comprised of Vietnam veterans and individuals from the Pittsburgh area who have been helping the citizens of Danang, Vietnam for over 8 years with such projects as school and clinic construction, providing prosthetics for children of landmine accidents and general humanitarian relief, and
WHEREAS, their latest efforts has been the erection of a structural project, namely, a pedestrian bridge that links a flood prone area around the city of Danang to the neighboring schools, medical facilities and markets throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, this work could not be successfully completed without the leadership of the Danang Foreign Affairs Department's Director, Luong Minh Sam and the People's Committee of Danang Chairman, Tran Van Minh; and
WHEREAS, this project is being administered by East Meets West, a non-profit organization with headquarters in Danang, Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, the significance of building a bridge in Danang, Vietnam goes beyond the physical structure to a formation of healing and shall be named the "Bridge of Reconciliation."

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the efforts of Director Luong Minh Sam and Mayor Tran Van Minh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares April 4th, 2008, the day that the "Bridge of Reconciliation" is to be christened, as "Danang Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
