WHEREAS, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system which overtime can destroy the body’s ability to fight off infections and disease. HIV can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if not treated; and,
WHEREAS, greater than 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the USA. There is no known cure for HIV/AID, but with treatment the disease progression can be slowed, symptoms can be managed, and risk of transmission greatly reduced; and,
WHEREAS, housed at the University of Pittsburgh, the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center has provided HIV/AIDS education, consultation, technical assistance, and resource materials to health care professionals throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia for the past 30 years; and,
WHEREAS, the center will host the World AIDS Day 2018 Annual Conference on November 30, 2018 at Alumni Hall at the University of Pittsburgh to bring together experts in the field of HIV in order to enable physicians, nurses, and other HIV care providers to develop skills to identify and effectively treat those individuals diagnosed with HIV. This conference will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center and the 30th World AIDS Day.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center for their continued dedication to HIV/AIDS education in the MidAtlantic region; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, November 30, 2018, to be “MIDATLANTIC AIDS EDUCATION AND TRAINING CENTER 30TH ANNIVERSARY AND WORLD AIDS DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
