WHEREAS, the month of May is nationally recognized as Better Hearing and Speech Month; and,
WHEREAS, approximately ten percent of children have moderate to severe communication impairments, including speech production/articulation, stuttering, and language-learning difficulties; and,
WHEREAS, children with speech and language impairments are four to five times more likely than their peers to experience other language-learning disabilities; and,
WHEREAS, the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech is one of only 40 schools in the country that provides Listening and Spoken Language education to children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and is the only such school in the western Pennsylvania and tri-state region; and,
WHEREAS, the methods employed by the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech allow students to enter the educational mainstream with the foundation to succeed; and,
WHEREAS, the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech maintains a high level of educational quality, with a 4:1 student teacher ratio on average; and,
WHEREAS, the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech has been providing quality auditory and oral education for children with hearing loss for nearly 100 years.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech for their work to improve the quality of life for the youth of the City of Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 19, 2014, as "Depaul School for Hearing and Speech Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
