WHEREAS, on September 29, 2006 the City of Pittsburgh will host, The NAACP second annual membership drive in the lobby of the City-County Building in hopes of enhancing the participation of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, with a "New Vision, New Leadership, and a New Direction", M. Gayle Moss, President of the NAACP; is dedicated to increasing the awareness of the NAACP and to increase membership to the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, the NAACP has been in existence since its founding in 1909 and has continues to fulfill its mission to "ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination"; and
WHEREAS, the success of the NAACP's initiative are chiefly dependant on its membership, as a larger more active membership is the best hope for protecting our freedom and advancing our rights as African-Americans.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh does recognize and commend the current membership of the NAACP as being champions of social justice, fighting to make sure all voices are heard.
BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 29, 2006 "NAACP Membership Drive Day in the City of Pittsburgh."
