Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize that Shirley Wheaton made it her life mission to be a positive example and dear friend to Homewood students, families and the community as a whole. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, November 2nd, 2025 to be "Shirley Wheaton Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shirley Ann Wheaton was born in Cumberland, Maryland, later relocating to Washington, D.C., Cornwell Heights, Pennsylvania, eventually moving to Pittsburgh and graduating from Schenley High School and attending the University of Pittsburgh’s New Professional Program in Social Work; and

 

WHEREAS Mrs. Wheaton mothered five children, Carol Ann, Linda Lea, Darlene Teresa, Mark Anthony and William Walter Jr; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Wheaton worked at the United States Postal Service, served as the SAM recruiter and coordinator at Westinghouse High School while coaching the soccer team and auxiliary bands at the school; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Wheaton was heavily involved in civic affairs in the following roles: Board member of Operation Better Block, Judge of Elections for over a half century in the 13th Ward, Democratic Committeewoman in the 13th Ward, volunteer with Keystone Paralyzed Veterans and the VA Hospital in Aspinwall and;

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Wheaton had many accomplishments and awards for her service including the Shakespeare Festival Award, PA Conference Black Basic Education, OBB Community Service Award, Hand In Hand Inc, MLK Jr. Award; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize that Shirley Wheaton made it her life mission to be a positive example and dear friend to Homewood students, families and the community as a whole.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, November 2nd, 2025 to be “Shirley Wheaton Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
