Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, for focusing on the needs of the children, their families, and remembering that education is the key to prevention.

WHEREAS, September is National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month. Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. is partnering with the Pittsburgh Pirates to celebrate by having on-field recognition and the first pitch on September 20, 2005 at Heinz Field; and
 
WHEREAS, the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. provides social, educational and economic support for children with Sickle Cell Disease and their families; and
 
WHEREAS, established in September 2002, the Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. is committed to bringing quality programs specifically to the children and families that are affected by sickle cell disease; and
 
WHEREAS, the programs include two monthly Family Support Programs that emphasize the health of the entire family. The Children's Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc. has also launched their Education Support Program to provide support for children that are absent from school; and
 
WHEREAS, this is a collaborative effort among the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Sickle Cell Program, under the medical direction of Lakshmanan Krishnamurti, MD and the Pittsburgh Public Schools, with Teresa Romano, Senior Program Officer, coordinating the connection in the schools to bring this program to our families.
