WHEREAS, all Department of Veterans Affairs' medical centers and many outpatient clinics and state veterans homes will observe the 33rd National Salute to Veteran Patients during the week of February 13-19, 2011; and
WHEREAS, the Salute is a time of caring and sharing, which underscore the Salute's expression of honor and appreciation to inpatient and outpatient veterans; and
WHEREAS, it is vital to honor veterans for the sacrifices they have made and the freedoms they have preserved; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary to increase community awareness of VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System's role in providing comprehensive medical care to our area's veterans; and
WHEREAS, residents of Pittsburgh are welcome and encouraged to visit hospitalized veterans and work as VA volunteers; and
WHEREAS, the veteran population in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as of September 30, 2010, numbered 964,100; and
WHEREAS, these men and women have given more than most to protect and preserve all we hold dear, as Americans; and
WHEREAS, each of us who feel privileged to live in this nation and have a special place in our hearts for these defenders of freedom can take this opportunity to express our affection and respect for those we admire; and
WHEREAS, many veterans receiving care in VA facilities are separated from family and friends, suffering physical or emotion pain, or facing uncertain futures; and
WHEREAS, by sharing our time and talent, we express the full measure of our national commitment to veterans; and
WHEREAS, the sons and daughters of the City of Pittsburgh have had a rich, long-standing tradition of patriotism and military service and now a new generation, of proud, young men and women, is serving and sacrificing for freedom around the world.
