Title: Now, therefore be it resoloved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the Neighborhood Academy for its wide-angled vision of a strong academic future for low-income students in Pittsburgh; and Be it further resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, September 6, 2011 Neighborhood Academy Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, the Neighborhood Academy began in 1993 as an innovative summer-school program for at-risk youth; and
Whereas, the Neighborhood Academy's current focus is on providing a college-preparatory education to low-income students; and,
Whereas, the Neighborhood Academy, fully accredited by the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools and a member of the Pittsburgh Consortium of Independent Schools, to date has achieved a 100% college acceptance rate in seven graduated classes of seniors; and,
Whereas, the Neighborhood Academy's unique approach includes very small classes, close and ongoing communication with families, and a college-preparatory curriculum that culminates in senior seminars in the humanities and sciences; and
Whereas, to help students succeed academically, the Neighborhood Academy also provides counseling, transportation, three meals a day, and assistance with emergency needs like medical care; and
Whereas, in 2008, the Neighborhood Academy's Board of Directors launched the $10 million Forging Futures Capital Campaign to address both the need for an endowment and for a new facility that meets a unique purpose as an accredited high school for low-income students; and
Whereas, the successful campaign will ensure the Neighborhood Academy becomes a sustainable academic institution, maintains its high-quality programming, and provides services to even more deserving young people; and,
Whereas, the new campus on 7.8 acres of land in Stanton Heights consists of two buildings--an academic building and a field house/gymnasium--in a natural environment with woods and gardens; and,
Whereas, these buildings will also become a valuable resource for the surrounding neighborhood serving as a gathering place for adult education classes, neighborhood meetings and recreational opportunities.
