WHEREAS, Ernest Bey has been a part of the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania local art scene for over forty (40) years. Mr. Bey’s talents were noticed early in his art career in 1973 while attending his alma mater Westinghouse High School; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Bey retired from Equitable Gas after thirty-seven (37) years of service and has had opportunities to work with the late Vernell Lillie, founder and artistic director of Kuntu Repertory Theatre where he created many unique art pieces; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1995 Mr. Bey was named Artist of the Year by the Champions Association. He received the prestigious Trailblazers Award for community Service in 2000; and was commissioned by Mark Clayton Southers of the Pittsburgh Playwrights to design the piano that would be in the August Wilson Theatre production, “Piano Lesson”; and,

 

WHEREAS, of Mr. Bey man original pieces he has created artwork for Pittsburgh Steeler Joey Porter and former NBA star Chriss Webber, his portfolio also expands to some musical celebrities such as Erykah Badu and rapper Common; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ernest Bey is an accomplished multimedia artist, proficient in watercolor and acrylic he is also a master wood carver and jewelry designer. Mr. Bey is a devoted community activists and active member of MADDADS of Greater Pittsburgh; and,

 

WHEREAS, Ernest is a devoted husband, father and grandfather who still holds his late father advise with him to this very day, “let the Ancestors speak through you” and this will be your legacy,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 22nd, 2024, to be “Ernest Bey Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
