WHEREAS, Earth Day was born on April 22, 1970, when demonstrators young and old, from all over the world, marched to promote a new environmental awareness; and
WHEREAS, much progress has been made since 1970 in protecting, conserving and enhancing our natural environment; and
WHEREAS, the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce has taken significant steps to protect our urban environment; and
WHEREAS, the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Second Annual Earth Day on Walnut on Saturday, April 24, in conjunction with the Great Pennsylvania Cleanup; and
WHEREAS, beginning at 7:00 a.m., the Walnut Street commercial district will be thoroughly cleaned by volunteer merchants, civic associations, residents, the Shadyside Boys and Girls Club and lots of good friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, earth-friendly, kid-friendly and family-friendly activities are scheduled throughout the morning and evening on Walnut Street, one of Pittsburgh's premier, green-thinking, urban business districts.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh salutes the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce for producing an earth-friendly and productive day of fun on Walnut Street; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares April 24 2004 to be "Earth Day on Walnut" in the City of Pittsburgh.
