WHEREAS, Dominique has excelled academically, and is now entering her senior year at the Winchester Thurston School. She was recognized for her academic achievements with the Scholastic Excellence Award from the FAME fund and Baptist Temple Church; and,
WHEREAS, Dominque has been a heavily involved social activist throughout her time in high school, as seen in her membership of the Pittsburgh Student Activist Coalition and Teens for Change, her involvement in Youth Undoing Institutional Racism, and her MLK day presentation to the Winchester Thurston School about how students can get involved for social change; and,
WHEREAS, Dominique has simultaneously been an active member of her community through habitual community service, such as for Pittsburgh Cares and the Mount Ararat Baptist Church; and,
WHEREAS, this past Spring, Dominque was accepted into the Startable Pittsburgh program, an 8 week Summer program that offers high school students the opportunity to incubate a business and explore entrepreneurship through designing, making, marketing and selling novel products; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the innate rigor of the Startable Pittsburgh program, Dominique was thrown the additional hurdles of illness and a lost week, forcing her to work late nights in order to complete her product on time; and,
WHEREAS, despite these challenges, Dominque opted to take on the additional task of participating in the pitching competition which followed the Startable Pittsburgh program; and,
WHEREAS, Dominique was the victor of the pitching competition for her hand-stitched embroidered "Selflove by Dom" throw blankets, which celebrate African American heritage. The design of which is a black power fist which is formed by small hearts of various skin tones, meant to represent the shades of the African diaspora; and,
