Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the volunteer efforts of our youth and commends Youth Service America with the countless number of community organizations for giving youth self appreciation for the need to volunteer and be involved in their neighborhoods for the betterment of the community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 16, 2004 as "National Youth Service Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Youth Service America is a resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people in America, to serve locally, nationally and globally; and

WHEREAS, YSA was founded in 1986 to strengthen the effectiveness, sustainability and scale of youth service and service-learning fields through a powerful network of organizations committed to making service and service-learning a common expectation and common experience for all young people in America; and

WHEREAS, YSA works towards their mission in four core strategies: Organizing Public Policy and Awareness Campaigns, Convening the Field, Offering Incentives and Recognition, and Providing Information and Educational Resources; and

WHEREAS, in 1988, YSA and the Campus Outreach Opportunity League organized the first National Youth Service Day. This has become the largest service event in the world, mobilizing millions of young Americans to identify and address the needs of their communities through service; and

WHEREAS, the goals of National Youth Service Day are to mobilize youths as leaders to identify and address the needs of their communities through service and service-learning to support youth on a lifelong path of service and civic engagement, and to educated the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders; and

WHEREAS, this year, the YSA will celebrate the 16th Annual National Youth Service Day on April 16, 2004.
