WHEREAS, Wilbert Darling is a distinguished member of the United States’ Greatest Generation for his service in WWII; and,

 

Body

WHEREAS, Mr. Darling graduated from the University of Pittsburgh as a Pharmacist in 1943. Soon after graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy assigned to the Pacific Fleet; and,

 

WHEREAS, after his training, Lieutenant JG Darling was given command of a landing craft in IWO Jima where he assisted in transporting US Marines from ship to shore during one of our Nation’s most deadly and fierce campaigns; and,

 

WHEREAS, in honor of his continued bravery and service, the ship he commanded was named “Darling Boy”; and,

 

WHEREAS, after he was discharged from the Navy in 1946, he and another fellow Navy Officer owned and operated Hill Pharmacy in Pittsburgh. Years after opening the pharmacy, he founded Ace Demolition, a Pittsburgh demolition company; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Darling and his late wife Estelle had 3 daughters, Linda, Hope and Shelly and has been blessed with Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren.  Mr. Darling currently resides in Squirrel Hill; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor Mr. Wilbert Darling for his intense loyalty, dedication and unparalleled leadership; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, November 20, 2021   to be “Mr. Wilbert Darling Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
