WHEREAS, bridges enhance the quality of life of citizens in our city by providing better transportation, spectacular views, and a vital link to our architectural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Bob Regan, a great advocate of urban design, declares that Pittsburgh has more bridges than any other city in the world in his new book, "The Bridges of Pittsburgh," which celebrates the 446 bridges in the city; and
WHEREAS, the book's release coincides with the Engineers' Society's International Bridge Conference this week in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, we recognize the profound gift of Pittsburgh's topography which requires an abundance of bridges to accommodate the needs of road traffic; and
WHEREAS, today we honor Bob Regan, an accomplished author, and Tim Fabian, a talented photographer, for the official release of their book "The Bridges of Pittsburgh" and their devotion to the personal exploration of our city's unique landmarks; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares June 13, 2006 "City of Bridges Day," and urges the people of Pittsburgh to join Bob Regan and Tim Fabian in promoting the architectural wonder and cultural significance of bridges in Pittsburgh.
