Whereas, the 1st Annual Freedom Fighter Award Luncheon will be held on Saturday June 12, 2004 at Westinghouse High School, honoring Mr. Nate Smith of Pittsburgh, PA; and
Whereas, Mr. Nate Smith has served as a civil rights/human rights leader throughout this city, county, and state. Mr. Smith has been recognized nationally for his participation in Operation Dig/Pittsburgh Plan. He also led the labor movement to integrate skilled craft trade unions. He has been featured in numerous publications which include, the Wall Street Journal, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ebony Magazine and the Jet Magazine, just to name a few; and
Whereas, currently Mr. Smith is a mentor and role model to students in the public schools in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas discussing career options for young people in building trades, including carpentry and electrical and operating engineering through a new program entitled Renaissance III 2000 Incorporate; and
Whereas, Mr. Nate Smith has dedicated his life to challenging the status quo by seeking diversity in skilled building trade professions.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH congratulates Mr. Nate Smith on receiving the "Freedom Fighter" award from the Pittsburgh African-American Legacy Committee as well as an honorary diploma from the Pittsburgh Public School system. He has served both his community and country very well.
