WHEREAS, Urban Pathways College Charter School (K-5) in Downtown Pittsburgh will be conducting a "Ringing In Reading" Bell Ceremony to celebrate literacy on Friday, September 12th, at 1:00 pm at the school located on 914 Penn Ave; and,
WHEREAS, Urban Pathways is a free charter school located in Downtown Pittsburgh, as the Downtown K-5 school celebrates its 4th year in existence, and the Urban Pathways charter enters its 16th year with the distinction that all of its students graduate, and all of its students are accepted to college; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of Urban Pathways is to help every child find a pathway that leads toward a successful adult life in the city environment and beyond, with a pledge to guide every child to acquire the academic competencies, the attitudes and the network of support relationships that will allow them to continue on that path after graduation; and,
WHEREAS, Urban Pathways is organized as a non-profit corporation and committed to operating in a completely non-sectarian manner, creating an intercultural community where students learn together and change the conditions in which we live; and,
WHEREAS, every student at Urban Pathways has a personal education plan that's developed and closely monitored by a team that includes the student, parents or other supportive adults, and a teacher/advisor; and,
WHEREAS, students at Urban Pathways learn through a combination of individualized practice and basic skills, theme-based courses, small group projects, and community-based shadowing and internship experiences, the end result being an engaging experience that makes students like school;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 9, 2014 to be "Urban Pathways' Ringing in Reading Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
