Body
WHEREAS, the objectives of the Western PA Humane Society include promoting responsible pet ownership; maintaining an open door policy of accepting all animals surrendered by the public and placing all adoptable animals into adoptable homes; and
WHEREAS, Duncan, a sweet, docile pit bull terrier mix, was surrendered by his owner at a very young age; and
WHEREAS, the caring and attentive staff at the Western PA Humane Society noticed that the pup was limping and immediately had his hip x-rayed which confirmed the staff veterinarian's diagnosis of a break in his growth plate, necessitating the amputation of his leg; and
WHEREAS, his surgery required a lengthy recovery, in a foster home that could provide the follow up care necessary for his full recovery and Karen Paschel, a dedicated volunteer, didn't hesitate to welcome Duncan, into her home; and
WHEREAS, at his young age, Duncan is still growing and is determined not to let his disability hold him back from running and playing and this activity level began to take a toll on his existing back leg, so a doggie wheelchair became necessary to support his activities; and
WHEREAS, when Oprah Winfrey was looking for stories of success, with special needs dogs, across the country, her staff came upon Duncan's story and he was mentioned on her show and became the 'Face of Pennsylvania' on Oprah's web site.
