Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Yvonne Durham and the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh for their efforts to educate people on the importance of early detection and raise awareness of breast cancer through the ENCOREplus program.

WHEREAS for the past 10 years, the YWCA has worked to create awareness of breast cancer, one of the most common cancers among American women, through their annual Pink Ribbon Luncheon; and
WHEREAS the chance of developing invasive breast cancer sometime in a woman's life is about one in eight; and
WHEREAS according to the American Cancer Society the most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2009 consist of over 190,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer; and
WHEREAS despite these alarming statistics, breast cancer death rates are decreasing as a result of improved treatments and early detection, which is the most important factor in successfully treating breast cancer; and
WHEREAS knowing this, the YWCA ENCOREplus Program, under the leadership of Yvonne Durham, actively promotes early detection education; and
WHEREAS in response to the inequalities in access to healthcare for many women, the ENCOREplus program works to remove the barriers by providing patient navigation into the healthcare system, support for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, and promoting effective community outreach; and
WHEREAS the ENCOREplus program is funded by the AVON Foundation Breast Care Fund and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Pittsburgh Affiliate; and
WHEREAS the program provides outreach and education in breast and cervical health with a focus on reaching medically underserved women including low income, minorities, the elderly and the under-insured; and
WHEREAS partly because of programs like ENCOREplus, there are currently about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States; and
WHEREAS the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh will hold the 10th anniversary celebration of the annual Pink Ribbon Luncheon and fashion show at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, an event that is dedicated to raising Breast Cancer Awareness in the Pittsburgh region on October 17th, 2009.
