WHEREAS, on behalf of the citizens of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I join Nickelodeon and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation- a joint initiative of the American heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation in celebrating World Wide Day of Play and in ensuring that today's generation of kids become one of the healthiest; and
WHEREAS, the rates of childhood obesity are rising at alarming costs; and
WHEREAS, today's generation of children could be the first to live shorter lives than their parents, according to some experts; and
WHEREAS, conditions not usually seen until adulthood such as heart disease, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure are becoming more prevalent in children; and
WHEREAS, today's children and adults do not get as much exercise as they should, and
WHEREAS, nutritious diets and physical activity are an important component to living healthy lifestyles and reducing disease; and
WHEREAS, overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize September 30, 2006 as the "World Wide Day of Play" in the City of Pittsburgh and urges youth and families to engage in healthy behaviors such as walking, playing games, hiking, and cooking healthy meals.
