Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh would like to commend and thank the Pittsburgh Urban Ecological Collaborative for their dedication, commitment, and leadership in conservation efforts in the City of Pittsburgh, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLIVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Friday, April 22, 2005 "Earth Day" in the City of Pittsburgh and honors the Pittsburgh Urban Ecological Collaborative for their efforts in the betterment of our City.

WHEREAS, Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 by demonstrators around the world marching for environmental awareness and a new world view emerging through the eyes of our older and younger generations to see our planet as a home to all; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day founder Senator Gaylord Nelson once wrote about the first Earth Day that, "Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself,"; and

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Urban Ecological Collaborative is comprised of 12 local environmental advocacy groups, including, the Pennsylvania Resources Council, Earthforce, PA Cleanways, Nine Mile Run Watershed Association, Conservation Consultants Inc., Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Student Conservation Association, the Department of Environmental Protection, Frick Environmental Center, Urban Farming Initiative, Green Lots, and Partners in Parks; and

WHEREAS, these dedicated organizations work extensively on environmental awareness, education, and clean-up in urban neighborhoods and continue to promote the grassroots efforts that made Earth Day a success 35 years ago; and

WHEREAS, the hard-work and commitment of the Urban Ecological Collaborative to bring together individuals and groups to clean-up and conserve Pittsburgh and our neighborhoods has had a profound effect on the quality of life in our City; and
