Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh salutes Dr. Walter Jacob, distinguished rabbi, gentleman and scholar, who has influenced lay people and clergy of all faiths for the last 50 years; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares June 18, 2005 "Dr. Walter Jacob Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, this year, Dr. Walter Jacob, Rabbi Emeritus and Senior Scholar of Rodef Shalom Congregation, will observe the 50th Anniversary of his ordination as well as 50 years of affiliation with Rodef Shalom Congregation, Western Pennsylvania's largest and oldest synagogue; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Jacob's accomplishments as a rabbi, teacher, pastor, communal and international leader during his 50 years in the Rabbinate are well known; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Jacob, besides serving Rodef Shalom's congregants so ably, has also served as President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Jacob and his wife Irene established Rodef Shalom's Biblical Botanical Garden, the largest such garden in North America; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Jacob has written 26 books and more than 1,100 essays and articles, many of which deal with legal interpretation of Jewish law; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Jacob has been instrumental in re-establishing Reform Judaism in Germany and founding the Abraham Geiger College in Germany to train Reform rabbis, and is currently serving as Chief Rabbi of Munich; and
 
WHEREAS, Rodef Shalom Congregation is pleased to honor its beloved Rabbi Emeritus, Dr. Walter Jacob, on June 18, 2005, when his distinguished rabbinic career and 75th Birthday will be celebrated.
