WHEREAS, fighting fires is one of the most physically demanding professions which requires strength, stamina, extensive training, courage, and concern for the welfare of our citizens; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the Fire Bureau's public safety service to communities, fire fighters across the nation have joined with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for over 55 years in the fight against neuromuscular disease with its Fill the Boot Campaign; and,
WHEREAS, City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters collected $53,074 throughout the community with their 2009 Fill-the-Boot campaign for MDA; and,
WHEREAS, the funds collected by the City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters assist MDA in providing medical services at local clinics and helps provide funding for summer camp, research grants, support groups, and public education seminars at no cost to local children and families; and,
WHEREAS, in honor of the efforts of the City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters, the Muscular Dystrophy Association is sponsoring City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighter Appreciation Month during the month of September and the Council of the City of Pittsburgh is asking all residents to join MDA in appreciating the fire fighters for the work that they do and for helping them on Friday, September 3 to enjoy another successful year by donating to the Muscular Dystrophy Association during their annual Fill The Boot Campaign; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Fire Fighters for the work they do in protecting our citizens and for their efforts on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of September to be "Fire Fighters Appreciation Month" in the City of Pittsburgh.
