WHEREAS, The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society was established in 1958 by Norma Gill Thompson and Doctor Rupert B. Trumbull as WCET; and
WHEREAS, in 1971 established bylaws, standards of training and standards of ethics for the 300 members nationwide who at that time were only doing care in ostomies; and
WHEREAS, in 1980 began offering certification as an organization, in 1987 continence care became a part of the program and in 1991 changed their name to Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses; and
WHEREAS, WOCM nurses work in many areas of health care including acute care, long term care, home care, wound centers, private practice and corporate positions; and
WHEREAS, worldwide there of 6,000 members made up of regional and local affiliates which includes over 70 members of the Pittsburgh affiliate which stretches from Warren, PA to Holidaysburg, PA and is part of the North East Region made up from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York; and
WHEREAS, WOCN members are active in community programs, such as youth rallies, community educational programs, and Pittsburgh Ostomy Society

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society's efforts and dedicated service to the patients and communities they serve.
