Title: WHEREAS, in 1943, at 18 years of age, the late David Moses joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Shortly after Basic Training in California, David was sent to Guam to serve in the Marine Corps' Third Division. The Third Division tasked as a "floating reserve" for the invasion of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Marines; and,

WHEREAS, in 1943, at 18 years of age, the late David Moses joined the U.S. Marine Corps.  Shortly after Basic Training in California, David was sent to Guam to serve in the Marine Corps’ Third Division. The Third Division tasked as a “floating reserve” for the invasion of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Marines; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Moses and his regiment landed on Sulfuric Island and taken to Airfield #2, which required crossing over open ground, being exposed to machine gun, tank, and artillery fire from higher ground; and,

 

WHEREAS, David was then assigned with taking Airfield #3. David and his fellow Marines found themselves surrounded and in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. David and his regiment were stuck in a foxhole for 36 hours until finally being rescued by a group of Marine tanks; and,

 

WHEREAS, following the battle of Iwo Jima, David was sent to Guam, then spent nine months in China, and somehow found some time for R&R. After his discharge in 1946, David worked in the service industry at several locations including Tambellini’s, Alcoma and Green Oaks Country Clubs; and,

 

WHEREAS, David was a friend and a hero, dedicated to giving love rather than taking it; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the late David Moses and thank him for his bravery and selfless service to the United States of America; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Saturday, November 12, 2022 to be “David Moses Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
