Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulates Vietnam Veterans Inc. for their Annual Vigil for POW/MIAS and recognizes the third Friday of September as POW/MIA Recognition Day; and , BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, September 19, 2008, to be “POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the mission of Vietnam Veterans Inc. is to foster, encourage and promote comradeship and esprit de corps amongst Vietnam Veterans; to promote the physical and cultural improvement, growth, development, self respect and self confidence of Vietnam Veterans; to increase public awareness of and appreciation for the contributions of Vietnam Veterans to American society and to assist disabled and needy Vietnam Veterans, their dependents and the dependents of deceased Vietnam Veterans ; and,
WHEREAS, Vietnam Veterans Inc. will be acknowledging POW/MIA Recognition Day, which first took place in Pittsburgh in Point State Park at the urging of World War II POW Sol Gross who contacted Congressman William Moorhead who then set into action the bill which made the third Friday in September a national holiday for POWs and MIAs ; and,
WHEREAS, POW/MIA Recognition Day was established to ensure that America remembers its responsibility to stand behind those who served our nation and do everything possible to account for those who do not return; and,
WHEREAS, Vietnam Veterans Inc. will also be holding its 26th Annual POW/MIA Vigil at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum on Saturday, September 20, 2008, to raise awareness and remember all the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action from all wars ; and,
WHEREAS, the Vigil for POW/MIAS will feature Keynote Speaker, Jack Wagner, PA State Auditor General, former Allegheny County Commissioner Larry Dunn and former WW II POWs Sol Gross and Frank Kravetz as well as the bearing of the United States Flag, a Memorial Float, a Candlelight Vigil and Prayer Service, the Missing Man Table, poetry and readings and a special presentation on the “National Cemetery Outreach”. .
