WHEREAS, John Charney began his 20-year career at Winchester Thurston School in 2005 as Lower School Director and currently serves as Executive Director of Facilities and Renovations; and,
WHEREAS, John taught for many years before moving into an administrative role, serving as Director of Early Childhood, Director of Co-Curricular Programs, and twice serving as Interim Head of School; and,
WHEREAS, John progressed to the roles of Director of Technology, Assistant Head for Operations, and leader of WT’s Pandemic Team, building a reputation for leadership and generosity, notably exhibited by his consistent provision of balloon hats to celebrate students’ birthdays; and,
WHEREAS, and, Mr. Charney oversaw facilities, safety, security, construction, healthcare, and technology, managing $5.3 million in renovations on time and on budget; and,
WHEREAS, an avid runner who completed marathons in 29 states, John will now enjoy retirement as a Zamboni driver at the Hunt Armory Ice Rink; and,
WHEREAS, John and his wife Annie have four sons (three WT graduates) and three grandchildren, including Trixie, Class of 2039; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Charney is loved by his students, colleagues, family and friends for his kindness and generosity.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend John Charney for his dedicated service to Winchester Thurston School; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 5, 2025, to be “JOHN CHARNEY DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
