Title: WHEREAS, the Old Residents of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania established a historical society to help preserve local history in 1879; and,

WHEREAS, the Old Residents of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania established a historical society to help preserve local history in 1879; and,

WHEREAS, the society expanded to include women and children in its’ later years; and

 

WHEREAS, members of the Historical Society sought to preserve archival material and objects of historic significance contributing towards forming the foundation of the History Center’s collections; and,

 

WHEREAS, this society would lay the groundwork for what we know today as The Senator John Heinz History Center; and,

 

WHEREAS, the History Center opened its Smithsonian wing in 2004; and

 

WHEREAS, The Senator John Heinz History Center is now the oldest cultural institution in Western Pennsylvania and has been recognized by USA Today for being the best history museum in the country; and,

 

WHEREAS, the History Center continues to act as the bridge connecting the past to the present; and,

 

WHEREAS, the History Center’s contribution to preserving the rich and diverse history of Pennsylvania has led to the center’s development of numerous educational programs, its popular exhibitions and its appearance in numerous publications;

 

WHEREAS, it is with great pride and honor that the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes September 17th, 2024 as The Senator John Heinz History Center Day in the city.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does commend The Senator John Heinz History Center for being voted the country’s best history museum.

 

AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares September 17th, 2024 to be Senator John Heinz History Center Day here in the City of Pittsburgh.
