WHEREAS, WQED Multimedia, Pittsburgh’s pioneering public media station and the nation’s first community-supported television station, has long served as a cultural cornerstone, telling the stories of the people, places, and passions that make our region unique; and,WHEREAS, on September 20, 2025, WQED received a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award for Pittsburgh’s Soul Food, an original documentary celebrating the rich culinary heritage, community spirit, and deep cultural roots of Pittsburgh’s Black community; and,
WHEREAS, inspired by William B. Marshall and his annual Soul Food Festivals, the film explores the deep regional roots of Soul Food through insights from Samuel W. Black, Director of African American Programs at the Senator John Heinz History Center, and visits to local restaurants where food brings people together across cultures; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh’s Soul Food highlights how food connects generations, serving as both nourishment and storytelling-linking family, history, and identity through powerful narratives that uplift and inspire; and,
WHEREAS, this recognition reflects WQED’s ongoing commitment to inclusive storytelling, community engagement, and journalistic excellence, continuing a legacy that began in 1954 when WQED first went on the air as the nation’s first public television station; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize WQED Multimedia for its Emmy Award-winning production Pittsburgh’s Soul Food, commending its dedication to preserving and sharing the stories that define our city; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, November 24, 2025, to be “WQED Pittsburgh’s Soul Food Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
