Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh joins the community in celebrating the mortgage burning of Bethel A.M.E. Church.

WHEREAS, when Rev. Dr. James H. McLemore arrived to pastor Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, December 12, 1996, it had a fifteen-year mortgage with Dwelling House Savings and Loan for needed building updates including the installation of a central air conditioning system. Through the united efforts of Bethel's members, its church organizations and the pastor's leadership, the mortgage was retired in ten years.  Thus, the grand celebration of the mortgage burning on Sunday, June 6, 2004 with Bishop Robert V. Webster presiding.
 
WHEREAS, Ten years ago, Bethel's Mortgage Debt Retirement Committee inspired many to pledge an initial $500.00.  Those funds were coupled with voluntary contributions and a payment initiative, chaired by Doris Carson Williams, whereby Trustees, Stewards and many members divided into groups of 5 or 6 for 12-month cycles to pay $100.00.  Thus, the mortgage payment was always covered.  
 
WHEREAS, with the mortgage debt paid, a new capital campaign was launched on Sunday June 6, 2004, chaired by Gregory Spencer and Johnnie L. Miott, with initial pledges of $100.00 to $2,000.00.  Bethel's capital funds will continue to shepherd renovations, outreach ministries, classrooms, discipleship and transportation.
