Title: WHEREAS, the urban farming community has made substantial contributions to our environmental health; and WHEREAS, Urban Foodworks and the Farmer's Market Alliance of Western Pennsylvania, the Penn State Co-operative Extension, Grow Pittsburgh and Mildreds' Daughters Farm, Healcrest Urban Community Farm and the Urban Farming Initiative work to facilitate urban farming projects, provide fresh produce and engage urban residents in farming activities; and WHEREAS, The Farmer's Market Alliance of Western Pennsylvania is committed to building vibrant farmers' markets, thereby supporting the economically sustainable small farms that Urban Foodworks aims to establish on formerly urban vacant lots; and WHEREAS, the Penn State Co-operative Extension gives residents and farming initiatives direct and easy access to the resources of the Pennsylvania State University that address agriculture and horticulture; and WHEREAS, Grow Pittsburgh's mission is to model, teach, and facilitate sustainable ...

WHEREAS, Urban Foodworks and the Farmer's Market Alliance of Western Pennsylvania, the Penn State Co-operative Extension, Grow Pittsburgh and Mildreds' Daughters Farm, Healcrest Urban Community Farm and the Urban Farming Initiative work to facilitate urban farming projects, provide fresh produce and engage urban residents in farming activities; and
WHEREAS, The Farmer's Market Alliance of Western Pennsylvania is committed to building vibrant farmers' markets, thereby supporting the economically sustainable small farms that Urban Foodworks aims to establish on formerly urban vacant lots; and
WHEREAS, the Penn State Co-operative Extension gives residents and farming initiatives direct and easy access to the resources of the Pennsylvania State University that address agriculture and horticulture; and
WHEREAS, Grow Pittsburgh's mission is to model, teach, and facilitate sustainable urban agriculture within the Pittsburgh region; and
WHEREAS, Mildreds' Daughters Farm is an affiliate of Grow Pittsburgh that sells organic products to markets and restaurants and is located on five acres of land in the Lawrenceville/Station Heights area; and
WHEREAS, Healcrest Urban Community Farm is a 1.7 acre vegetable farm built on formerly vacant lots in Garfield Heights that employs 10 youth from the city to grow affordable foods for Garfield and its surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, the Urban Farming Initiative aims to turn vacant lots into vegetable farms to stimulate economic development in neighborhoods, in addition to providing a lecture series in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University on urban farming in 2007.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes the positive impact that urban farming initiatives have on our quality of life; and
